Movie Snob Review of Molly’s Game
| Jan072018I snuck away last night and saw two movies after my girls went to bed. The first one I saw was Molly’s Game. This is a true story about a woman who is running some of the highest stakes poker games in the U.S. She ends up getting caught by the FBI and this is the story of how it all went down and what happens to her. I won’t give away too many details about the story itself.
I really like Jessica Chastain and she played the lead. That was reason enough for me to see it because I love her in Zero Dark Thirty and Interstellar. This movie had quite a bit of comedy in it, which I did not expect. The story itself was also not exactly what I thought it would be. One complaint I had is that it might have been a bit too smart. What I mean by that is there are so many references to poker, books, plays, law and other things that I found myself a bit lost at times. Perhaps I’m just not quite smart enough for this film. All the real people from the story are very intelligent and I’m sure that had something to do with it.
This is also a non-linear movie. That doesn’t bother me in the least, but can be somewhat confusing for some. I thought this film did it right though as it jumped back and forth at moments that made sense. I didn’t love the relationship that Molly (the main character) had with a lot of the people in the film. However, it did kind of all come together at the end. Plus it’s based on a true story, so some of that may have just been how it all really happened.
Overall this is definitely a movie worth seeing. It was fast-paced. It was 2 hours and 20 minutes, but never dragged on at all. It was a really fascinating story. And it’s definitely a movie I would buy and watch again.
FINAL SCORE: 72
