The second movie I saw last night was Hostiles. This is a story about an army Captain in the late 1800’s who is ordered to lead a native american chief and his family back to their home in Montana. The captain is played by Christian Bale. Bale and the rest of the cast all do a fantastic job.
Let me start by saying this movie is definitely not for everyone. It’s a pretty violent film. It also has a lot of scenery and not a ton of dialog. I personally love movies like this, but I can see where some would feel the pacing was too slow. The film isn’t short at 2 hours and 13 minutes, but it didn’t feel long to me either.
One complaint that I had was that a few of the characters were really prejudice against native americans at the start of the film and seemed to love them by the end of it. I understood the idea that this adventure they went on changed them. However, it was a little far-fetched to me to have them do a complete 180. The captain specifically mentions that he’s been in the military for 20+ years and has tons of “reason” to hate these people.
The scenery and music are top-notch. This is definitely a movie I recommend seeing in the theatre because the bigness of the scenery is quite spectacular. I’m a little surprised that this film isn’t gaining more attention. Often times westerns are really loved by both the box office and the award shows. However, this film isn’t really doing very well in either of those. I’ve heard mentions that it’s too violent, but I didn’t see that at all. Yes, there is violence. But it’s not over the top at all.
I highly recommend seeing this one if you have a chance. And if you like westerns, this is a can’t miss.
